Peter Yates’ Bullitt
, starring Steve McQueen, features one of the most influential car chases in film history. Its exciting sequences are achieved by Frank P. Keller’s dynamic editing and by a go-kart-like camera rig later called the “Bullitt car” which allows filming from street level.

Spielberg is clearly influenced by Peter Yates’ movie: For his first feature film Duel (1971) he hires Bullitt’s stunt coordinator Carey Loftin as well as Pat Eustis – inventor of the “Bullitt car”. McQueen is also Spielberg’s first choice for the lead in Close Encounters (1977) but the actor declines.
