Akiro Kurosawa dies at the age of 88.

After an accident in 1995, he had to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, so his longtime wish remains unfulfilled: to die on the set while shooting a movie.

Spielberg, one of his greatest admirers, is “deeply saddened by Kurosawa’s death (…) But what encourages me is that he (…) is the only director who right until the end of his life continued to make films that were recognized as, or will be recognized as, classics.”
